Why Dive Here
One of Africa's Greatest Dive Destinations
Mozambique sits on the edge of the Indian Ocean current — warm water, healthy reefs, and marine life on a scale that rivals anywhere on the planet. Ocean safaris, reef dives, and seasonal humpback whales are part of the appeal.
Unlike crowded dive hubs elsewhere, much of Mozambique's coastline is still genuinely underexplored. You'll share the water with reef life and open blue — not dozens of other boats.
- Ocean safaris, reef sharks, humpbacks, and dugongs
- Water temperatures from 22°C to 28°C year-round
- Visibility regularly 20–30 metres on outer reefs
- Far fewer divers than better-known destinations

Tofo
Tofo & Manta Reef
Praia do Tofo is Mozambique's diving heartbeat — a lively seaside village on the Inhambane coast. Manta Reef is the signature outer reef: a drift dive on the sandy plateau with groupers, turtles, schooling fish, and coral bommies.
Ocean safaris depart from the beach, and PADI centres offer courses from try-dives through Advanced and Nitrox. The town has an easy, barefoot energy that keeps divers coming back year after year.
- Manta Reef — 12–22m, visibility 15–30m
- Zodiac boat launches — Advanced Open Water helpful
- Ocean safaris and snorkelling for non-divers
- Fly VNX (Airlink) and transfer to Tofo

Bazaruto
Reefs & Dugongs in the Marine Park
Two Mile Reef sprawls across Bazaruto National Marine Park — hard and soft corals, potato groupers, green turtles, and the occasional dugong grazing in the shallows. Five main islands (Bazaruto, Benguerra, Magaruque, Santa Carolina, and Bangue) rise from turquoise water off Vilanculos.
Multiple dive profiles suit all experience levels, from relaxed reef drifts to deeper bommie explorations. Diving here pairs naturally with island-hopping — dhow sails, sandbar picnics, and lodge life between dive days.
- Two Mile Reef — 8–24m, visibility 10–25m
- Potato groupers, turtles, and dugong sightings
- Pristine hard corals in a protected marine park
- Gateway town: Vilanculos (Vilankulo Airport, VNX)

Zululand
Sodwana Bay & the Maputaland Coast
Sodwana Bay sits on the edge of iSimangaliso Wetland Park — one of South Africa's richest reef coastlines, with coral gardens, ragged-tooth sharks in season, and turtle encounters on night dives. Multiple reef systems from 9–30 metres suit confident divers who want warm Indian Ocean water with established operator support.
Pair reef days with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi safari drives and hippo-filled boat cruises on the St Lucia estuary — a bush-and-reef circuit within a few hours' drive. Fly into Durban (DUR) or Richards Bay (RCB) and we handle the rest.
- Sodwana Bay reefs — 9–30m, visibility 10–25m
- Ragged-tooth sharks, turtles, and seasonal humpbacks
- Combine with Hluhluwe-iMfolozi and St Lucia
- Gateway: Durban (DUR) or Richards Bay (RCB)

Common Questions
Everything You Need
to Know
May to November offers the calmest seas and best visibility on outer reefs. Humpback whales migrate through from July to October. The wet season (December to April) is hotter and quieter on the coast.
Tofo's outer reefs and Manta Reef involve currents and depths of 20 metres or more — Advanced Open Water is recommended, and Nitrox can help. All PADI courses are available in Tofo. Bazaruto offers profiles for all levels. Sodwana Bay suits certified divers comfortable on open-ocean reefs.
Yes. Gorongosa National Park in Mozambique and Kruger National Park in South Africa pair well with a dive holiday — southern Kruger and Mozambique's south coast combine most easily. We can advise on regions and realistic driving or flight connections.
Fly to Vilankulo (VNX) with Airlink for Tofo (road transfer), Vilankulo (VNX) for Bazaruto, or Durban (DUR) for Sodwana Bay. We arrange airport transfers and overland connections from whichever hub suits your route.
Most dive centres rent full kit, and many packages include tanks and weights. Tell us what you need when you enquire — we work with operators in Tofo, Vilanculos, and Sodwana Bay and can confirm inclusions before you book.
We strongly recommend dive-specific cover with evacuation benefits. DAN Southern Africa is a popular option for travellers diving in Mozambique, with decompression and medevac cover to South Africa when needed.
