Local customs, dress codes, photography etiquette, and how to travel respectfully in Mozambique.
Mozambique is welcoming and relaxed, but a little cultural awareness goes a long way — especially in rural areas and Muslim communities in the north.
General Etiquette
- Greetings matter — a handshake and a warm "bom dia" or "olá" is appreciated
- Dress modestly away from beach resorts, particularly in towns and villages
- Ask before photographing people — many are happy to oblige, some prefer not
- Tipping is appreciated but not obligatory; 10% in restaurants is standard
Beach & Resort Areas
Coastal lodges and dive towns like Tofo are informal. Swimwear on the beach is fine; cover up when walking through town.
Environmental Care
Marine parks and reserves have strict rules — no touching coral, no feeding wildlife, and follow your guide's instructions. Take rubbish with you from remote beaches.
Safety
Crime levels are generally lower than in neighbouring countries, but take normal urban precautions. Do not leave belongings unattended on beaches, avoid isolated areas at night, and do not walk alone after dark.
