Gorongosa-Nationalpark

Überblick

Über Gorongosa-Nationalpark

Gorongosa National Park in Sofala Province is one of Africa's most inspiring restoration stories — a 4,067 km² wilderness where civil-war devastation has given way to thriving elephant herds, recovering lion prides, and over 100 reintroduced African wild dogs. Often called the "Serengeti of the South," Gorongosa combines vast floodplains, fever-tree forests, limestone gorges, and the misty rainforest slopes of Mount Gorongosa (1,863 m).

Wildlife viewing concentrates around Lake Urema and the Urema River — boat safaris (usually March–May when water levels allow) bring you close to hippos, crocodiles, and extraordinary waterbird colonies. Game drives cross open plains where waterbuck and impala are abundant; with luck you encounter lion, elephant, buffalo, sable, and the park's habituated carnivores. Birders come for 500+ species including the Green-headed Oriole, a unique race found on Mount Gorongosa alongside endemic chameleons and pygmy species.

Activities include open-vehicle safaris, walking trails, Mount Gorongosa day excursions (waterfalls, coffee project, rainforest hikes), community visits, and stays at Chitengo camp or Montebelo Gorongosa Lodge. The park closes during heavy rains in January and February. Access is via graded road from the EN1 near Inchope — roughly 2–3 hours from Beira or Chimoio. Safari Air connects Gorongosa, Beira, and Vilanculos.

Ihre Reise nach Gorongosa-Nationalpark planen

One of Africa's greatest conservation comebacks — the "Serengeti of the South" with recovering elephant herds, 100+ African wild dogs, lion, 500+ bird species, Lake Urema boat safaris, and Mount Gorongosa rainforest in Sofala Province, Mozambique.

Most visitors fly into Beira or Chimoio and drive to the park — roughly 2–3 hours from Beira via Inchope on the EN1. Safari Air links Gorongosa, Beira, and Vilanculos for bush-and-beach routes. Road transfers from Maputo are possible but long. We arrange private transfers and can combine Gorongosa with a coastal stopover.

June to October (dry season) concentrates animals around Lake Urema and offers the best game viewing. The park closes during heavy rains in January and February. November is excellent for bird migration.

Yes when water levels allow — Lake Urema boat safaris are usually possible around March to May, bringing you close to hippos, crocodiles, and vast waterbird colonies. Game drives and walking safaris are the mainstay at other times of year.

Elephant, lion, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, sable, waterbuck, impala, and over 100 African wild dogs. Four of the Big Five are present (no rhino). Mount Gorongosa adds endemic birds and the Green-headed Oriole.

Two to four nights is typical — enough for game drives, a Lake Urema boat safari, birding, and optionally a Mount Gorongosa day trip. Gorongosa works as a standalone safari or combined with Vilanculos or Tofo.

Yes. Gorongosa pairs well with Vilanculos/Bazaruto or Tofo on the coast. We route overland or by short flight depending on your dates and how much driving you are comfortable with.
