Tofo Beach / Inhambane
Overview
About Tofo Beach / Inhambane
Praia do Tofo is Mozambique's diving hub — a barefoot beach village 22 km east of Inhambane city where the Agulhas Current feeds plankton-rich water that supports reef sharks, turtles, dolphins, seasonal humpback whales, and ocean safaris. Multiple PADI dive centres line the sand, and boats depart daily for snorkellers and divers alike.
Manta Reef is Tofo's signature site — a classic outer-reef drift at roughly 12–26 metres with potato groupers, turtles, schooling fish, and coral bommies on the sandy plateau. Shallower sites like Office Reef, The Oasis, and Praia da Rocha suit beginners, courses, and macro lovers.
Historic Inhambane — 30 minutes inland — adds colonial architecture and markets. Tofinho (Little Tofo) to the south offers surf, cliffs, and quieter beach. Tofo suits travellers who want an active dive town rather than crystal-clear island water — excellent value on the Indian Ocean coast.

Common Questions
Planning your trip to Tofo Beach / Inhambane
Mozambique's diving capital — Manta Reef and outer reefs, ocean safaris, seasonal humpback whales, and a lively barefoot village on the Inhambane coast. Historic Inhambane city is a short drive inland.
For Inhambane Province we recommend flying into Vilankulo (VNX) with Airlink where possible, then a road transfer to Praia do Tofo. We arrange airport pickups and can route you via Maputo if you prefer overland travel.
No for ocean safaris and snorkelling — megafauna and humpbacks are often accessible from the surface. You can complete any PADI course in Tofo if you want to learn to dive. Certified divers benefit from Advanced Open Water: many sites are 20 metres or deeper and dives run from zodiac-style boats. Nitrox certification can help on deeper reefs.
Tofo is the active dive and ocean-safari town — plankton-rich water and a busy village scene (visibility can be lower than Bazaruto). Vilanculos gateways the Bazaruto Archipelago with clearer water and protected island reefs. Many travellers combine both.
Four to seven nights suits most diving holidays — enough for multiple ocean safaris, reef dives, and beach downtime. Shorter stays work for a focused long weekend of diving.
